‘Tea & Cake: A match made on Inis Oírr ’

Teach an Tae is owned and operated as a family business by Alissa & Michael Donoghue. Michael is from Inis Oírr, his family going back on the island for unknown generations, and has worked in tourism for years. One fateful day, he met Alissa as she stepped onto the pier for a tour to the island with her grandparents. They exchanged addresses over a cup of tea and a slice of porter cake, and kept in touch until their next meeting.

Alissa and Michael decided they would like to work together and opened their front door in 2005. Their menu features traditional Irish recipes that Michael's mother has taught Alissa, and also includes some of Alissa's family favourites from America. The flock of hens living in the yard provides beautiful, fresh eggs for the baking and the organic garden, made each year with sand and seaweed from the shore, is the source of vegetables and salads.

The Donoghues enjoy providing food with integrity and adding something special to their customers' visit. They know the power that a cup of tea and slice of cake can have!
